Baseball America predicts that USC will not be awarded a regional in Columbia because of our poor finish. However, it was also stated that it will be hard for the NCAA to pass up USC as a regional host because of the great fan support and full stadium.

South Carolina begins SEC Tournament action on Wednesday night as the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will face No. 5 Mississippi State, who defeated Missouri 2-1 on Tuesday in 17 innings. The Gamecocks finished the regular season 39-16 and 17-12 in the SEC. The Gamecocks were second in the SEC Eastern Division and fourth overall.

USC already ranked in the top 5 of 2 preseason polls

South Carolina has made its way into the top five of a pair of preseason football polls exactly 14 weeks from the start to the 2013 season.

Athlon Sports Magazine named the Gamecocks the No. 5 team in its preseason Top 25 poll, announced Thursday.

That comes one day after The Sporting News’ cover revealed that magazine had South Carolina No. 3 in its early rankings.

Clowney was voted by Athlon as a preseason All-American on the first team. Three Gamecocks earned preseason All-SEC honors, including Clowney on the first team; and tight end Rory Anderson and defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles on the second team.

In addition, the defensive line unit was rated No. 1 in the country and best in the SEC. The quarterback unit was ranked fourth in the conference. The defensive backs unit was ranked fifth in the conference.

Clowney defied all odds and hung around for his senior year. How good would THAT team be? A thoroughly seasoned Dylan Thompson throwing the ball to a more experienced receiving corps. An experienced RB (odds are on Davis). AND Clowney staying could be used as a recruiting tool for DaShawn Hand, who admittedly wants to model his game after Clowney’s. Put Clowney on one end, Hand on the other and look out. That would be an unstoppable combination if there ever was one.

Alas, one can dream…
